- METROPOLIS TEAMS WITH LONDON
SCIENCE MUSEUM AND RAF RED ARROWS TO CREATE WORLD'S FIRST
3D AEROBATIC SIMULATION EXPERIENCE - LAUNCH VENUE LONDON SCIENCE
MUSEUM
Dateline: 17 th Feb 2010, East Sussex, England. In early 2009 Metropolis Entertainment, the Science Museum, London and former Apollo astronaut, David Scott combined their talents to create a 3D / 4D multi-sensory experience, Legend of Apollo, created around the story of the moon landings of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Since its launch in June 2009, the attraction, showing in the Metropolis designed Force Field theatre in the Museum’s Wellcome Wing, has received positive critical acclaim and has exceeded expectations in terms of both visitor numbers and satisfaction.
Based on the success of Legend of Apollo, Metropolis has teamed again with the Science Museum for an even more ambitious project that will see the total re-development of the third floor simulation gallery and the introduction of what is believed to be the world’s first full motion ride to include a live action 3D aerobatic experience. Scheduled to be filmed in Cyprus in May 2010 with the world famous RAF Aerobatic team (‘the Red Arrows’), this will be the first time that a 3D ‘pilot’s eye view’ will have been captured in full high definition video. The filming will break totally new ground technologically and is the result of a programme which has seen the integration of a unique stereoscopic camera into the RAF Red Arrows Hawk display aircraft.
Once complete, the 3D experience will be linked, in the attraction, to dynamic six degree of freedom motion systems to totally ‘immerse’ the audience in the team’s 2010 display. Four single seat ‘kiddie ride’ simulators will run a scaled down version of the show for small children too young to participate in the main show.
Jennifer Burgos, head of commercial development at the Science Museum said that the project will be a fantastic addition to the Flight gallery on the third floor. “Combining the Red Arrows ethos of excellence and precision flying with that of the Science Museum in a groundbreaking experiential attraction will be one of the high spots of our 2010 programme. The attraction is scheduled to open mid year and we are delighted to be working again with Metropolis as our partner on what I’m sure will be another highly successful project”.
Metropolis Entertainment has emerged as one of the world’s leading providers of simulation and motion effects theatres, 3D and high definition content for the entertainment, educational and corporate sectors. Recent Metropolis projects include 3D motion theatres for the International Wetlands Centre in Hong Kong and the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth . In 2004 the company’s management team were instrumental in the creative and technical development of the 60 seat 3D theatre at Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum in the United States , which received the Museum and Heritage Award of Excellence. Current clients include Coca Cola, GE, Toyota , Repsol and El Corte Ingles as well as many of the world’s leading museums and visitor attractions.
